Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian, AUA President

Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian is the fourth president of the American University of Armenia, having assumed the post on July 15, 2014. He is on leave from the University of California, Berkeley, where he has served for 36 years, most recently as Professor and holder of the Taisei Chair in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is one of the founders of AUA and has previously served as the Founding Dean of Engineering and Director of Engineering Research Center and as Interim Provost of AUA, all concurrently with his Berkeley position.
Der Kiureghian’s teaching and research are in risk and reliability analysis of constructed facilities and systems, stochastic structural dynamics, earthquake engineering, and engineering decision making. He has an extensive record of publications, including 115 in archival journals. He is an elected foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia and an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He has served as Visiting Professor in universities in Slovenia, Japan, Italy, Denmark, India and Germany. Der Kiureghian received his B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Tehran University, Iran, and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1975. Dr. Randall Rhodes, Provost

Dr. Randall Rhodes holds a Ph.D., MA, and a BA in Art History from the University of Chicago. His primary academic affiliation has been with Frostburg State University, Frostburg, Maryland. Dr. Rhodes has been Associate Provost at Frostburg State since 2012. From 2009-2012 he was Assistant Dean of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Dr. Rhodes has been a faculty member at Frostburg since 1996 and held the rank of Full Professor. He has won Faculty Achievement Awards for Teaching and Service from Frostburg and an award for Academic Excellence in Higher Education Award, sponsored by Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce. His institutional service includes chairing the Faculty Senate, Academic Affairs Committee, University Undergraduate Curriculum Review Subcommittee; Evaluation Task Force; Visual Arts Department; Women’s Studies Program; President’s Advisory Council on Institutional Effectiveness; President’s Advisory Council on Diversity. Prior to his academic work at Frostburg, he taught at the State University College, Buffalo, NY; State University of New York, Geneseo, NY; Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY; Nazareth College, Rochester, NY. Dr. Rhodes has significant involvement in museum and gallery administration including the Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY; Genesee Country Museum, Mumford, NY; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Rhodes has presented 22 academic papers at various conferences and proceedings. He has published seven articles and catalogs on various aspects of art analysis. Ashot Ghazaryan, Vice President of Operations

Ashot Ghazarian comes to AUA after leading the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) in Armenia for nearly two decades. Ghazarian spent the last twenty years as Director of the AGBU Armenia. During that time he also served as a member of the Republic of Armenia’s Committee on Humanitarian Projects, the Academic Council of the Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts; the Board of Trustees of the World Bank-funded Social Investment Fund of Armenia; and Friends of the Armenian State Philharmonic Orchestra. Prior to leading the AGBU, Ghazarian headed the Medical Cybernetics Laboratory of the Yerevan Surgical Institute, headed a Department in the Experimental Factory of the Yerevan Physics Institute, and worked as Head of the Supply Department of the Bridge Construction Company of the Armenian Highway Construction Ministry. Ghazarian holds an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the State Engineering University of Armenia. |
Gevorg Goyunyan, Vice President of Finance

Gevorg Goyunyan has been with the University for more than 10 years, most recently as Controller and Director of Business Development. Goyunyan started with AUA in its Oakland office as its Financial Analyst and later held positions of Controller and Director of Business Development. Prior to joining AUA, he worked in the consulting and banking sectors in Armenia. Goyunyan holds multiple advanced degrees in Economics from Yerevan State University, an MBA with a concentration in Finance from the State University of New York in Binghamton and a BBA from Haigazian University in Beirut, Lebanon. |
Paul Yeghiayan, Vice President for Development

Mr. Paul Yeghiayan was recently the President and CEO of The Foundation for the Public’s Health. He led and managed the establishment and growth of all aspects of the organization. Mr. Yeghiayan was a member of the National Association of County and City Health Official’s Executive Team and worked closely with the Foundation’s Board of Trustees to establish and implement strategic planning, business development, marketing, communications, fundraising, partnerships, finance/budgeting, and personnel development. Mr. Yeghiayan introduced the concept of philanthropy to 2,800 local health departments through presentations and articles, including “Bridging the Divide Between Public Health and Philanthropy,” and “Building a Public Health Practice of Philanthropy.” Previously, Mr. Yeghiayan served as an Associate Director of Philanthropy with Heifer International from 2010 to 2014. He worked with individual, foundation, and corporate donors to secure funding for pro-poor agricultural value chain projects in more than 40 countries. He also led efforts to provide private partnership financing for a $25 million World Bank dairy project in Armenia. Mr. Yeghiayan created a campaign, all of the marketing assets for the campaign and trained more than 1,000 people to raise funds in support of the project. Mr. Yeghiayan worked on all aspects of personal and organizational giving from major gifts, planned gifts, prospect research, and grants. He routinely moved donors into higher giving categories by investing in donor-centric processes that linked the interests of the donor with beneficiary needs. From 2005 to 2010, Mr. Yeghiayan served as a Development Officer with Armenia Tree Project (ATP). In that role, he developed new sources of revenue from private foundations and individuals to assist with reforestation and environmental education programs in Armenia. Notably, Mr. Yeghiayan created an opportunity and secured funding for the development of Armenia’s first sustainable forestry manual. Mr. Yeghiayan also created and secured seed funding for ATP’s “Building Bridges” program, which links Diaspora Armenian students with their counterparts in Armenia so they can discuss environmental issues, engage in cross-cultural experiences, and build social capital to strengthen ATP’s work. Building Bridges is currently ATP’s flagship program. Mr. Yeghiayan earned a BA from The Evergreen State College and a Master of Liberal Arts with a concentration in Managing Nonprofit Organizations from Harvard University Extension School. |
