The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is pleased to bring a new option for diversifying AUA’s undergraduate students’ experience in preparation for a broad range of further education options and careers: Minors.
In addition to majors, most US universities permit students to pursue a secondary undergraduate specialization, or minor. Minors are considered a “secondary undergraduate specialization” to complement the major.
Pending final university approval, CHSS plans to offer the following two minors:
- Philosophy, Politics, & Economics (PPE)
- Genocide Studies & Human Rights (GSHR)
Minors are not specified on the diploma, but are noted on the transcript.
The minor requires 15 credits (5 courses) and can consist of free electives and/or build on General Education courses taken in satisfaction of General Education requirements. No more than one course can be counted toward fulfillment of both minor and major requirements. Because some majors have a limited number of free electives, students who wish to pursue a minor will need to plan their course choices carefully in order to fit the minor within the 120-credit undergraduate degree credit allotment. Courses taken beyond 120 credits may be subject to additional tuition charges.
Students do not need to do anything immediately to enroll or declare their intention to pursue a minor. This will be handled when they enroll in the upper-division Minor Seminar. The Minor Seminars will first be offered in Spring 2016.
Students must take a basic course from each category, plus the upper-division Minor Seminar course that usually involves a project, presentation and/or paper(s), which synthesize the various strands of the interdisciplinary minor. The basic courses offered in each category may vary from year to year and periodically be supplemented or adjusted. Those listed below are drawn from current and planned offerings.
